Iceland 2024

E Cleary - 04/10/2024 - Notice

Iceland 2024
Written by Joshua K (Y11)

This time last week we were able to see one of the world’s most amazing natural phenomena...

The Aurora Borealis or colloquially known as the “Northern Lights” are fantastical light displays, glowing across the sky with greens and purples, but what is the Aurora Borealis and how/when do they occur?

The display of lights is caused by electrically charged particles (ions) being launched from our sun during solar storms. These ions then race towards the earth and collide with the atoms in our atmosphere. It is this collision between particles that causes the sky to glow, but how does the sky light up with different colours
As you may know, our atmosphere on Earth is primarily made up of Nitrogen (78%) and Oxygen (21%) and both gasses light up differently when heated by the collisions from the ions. Oxygen can give us greens or reds while Nitrogen can give us blues, purples or pinks.

Over the span of 11 years the sun goes through what is called a solar cycle, where the number and intensity of solar storms flinging ions towards the Earth gradually increases before rapidly dropping again as the cycle restarts. At the time of the Iceland trip, we were nearing the peak of this cycle known as solar maximum, meaning that we were able to get some amazing photos of the Aurora during our short but amazing stay.

Iceland 2024

Iceland 2024
Written by Logan H (Y10)

This time last week we were on an amphibious boat in a glacial lagoon. The lagoon is made up of both fresh water and salt water as it is filled with water from the melting glaciers and with water from the sea. The icebergs in the lagoon were all shades of blue, black and white. The black colour is caused by the ash from volcanic eruptions. The blue is because the ice is extremely dense due to years of pressure and contains no air bubbles. 90% of each iceberg is underwater, meaning the giant icebergs that surrounded us were only 10% of what was actually there. The lagoon is home to many seals, this is because fully grown orca whales cannot fit through the passage into the lagoon to hunt them.

We would welcome donations at the end of the evening to help support more students by increasing our stock of electric & bass guitars plus percussion to continue to enable all students to access the joy of learning a musical instrument at our school.

The programme for this concert includes piano soloists, a string trio, vocalists, guitarists, a trumpeter, violinist and saxophonist.
